Sir Michael Lyons will publish his much anticipated final report from his independent Inquiry into the future role, function and funding of local government - "Place-shaping: a shared ambition for the future of local government" - at a breakfast briefing (9:30am for 10:00am) on Wednesday 21 March at one Whitehall Place, London.
Sir Michael will unveil his final recommendations and findings - highlighting the vital role that local government can play in creating a system of effective governance for the 21st century, improving satisfaction and building more prosperous communities. This will be followed by an open question-and-answer session.

This major national conference, hosted by Sir Michael Lyons, will offer delegates the opportunity to hear and debate final recommendations with senior figures from across central, regional and local government, as well as the business and third sectors. Notes for Editors
  1. Sir Michael Lyons was commissioned in July 2004 by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Chancellor to make recommendations on how to reform the local government funding system, by December 2005.
  2. On 20 September 2005 the remit of the Inquiry was extended to enable Sir Michael to consider issues of function before finalising his conclusions on funding.
  3. On 15 December 2005 Sir Michael issues his "Interim report and consultation document". A further paper was published on 8 May 2006 entitles "National prosperity, local choice and civic engagement".
  4. On 6 December 2006 the Chancellor announced a short extension to Sir Michael's Inquiry, for him to consider the implications of the Eddington, Barker and Leitch Reviews before finalising his report.
